Rachel Katherine Walker was born to Thomas and Marine Walker on October, 24th 1982. The very second she was out of her mother's womb, it became obvious the Rachel was going to be a bouncy, bubbly little girl. She was the description of the perfect baby. Rarely crying, able to easily amuse herself, and avoided most illnesses through infancy. The trouble came when she started walking, and exploring the house on her own. Rachel was a daredevil from the very first steps she took. Wrapping her tiny fingers around things such as wasps when she was outside, and diving headfirst onto the furniture indoors. Her parents quickly learned that she wouldn't be able to be left alone for any period of time. They made good on that observation for most of Rachel's childhood. Making it to almost eleven before she had any serious injury, Rachel had only seen her doctor once a year, and never been to the emergency room. That all changed one warm day in July of 1993. Rachel and her friends were at the local park, and were playing on the swings. In typical eleven year old fashion, they made a bet to see who could jump the farthest off the swings. Wanting to know exactly what she was up against, Rachel waited until last, letting all her other friends go first. She was determined to win, as she was with everything else, and made the swing go higher than she had ever gotten it before. With one last pump of her legs, he launched off the swing set and landed hard on the ground. The instant she hit, she her a terrifying crunch come from her left wrist, and an agonizing pain shot up her arm. Her friends quickly went and got Tom and Marie and Rachel was taken to the local emergency room. Once there, Rachel was amazed at the way the doctors, nurses and aides seemed to move like a carefully crafted machine. She was x-rayed, and casted then sent home. That time in the ER is what made Rachel decide she wanted to be a doctor. From then on, all of the courses she took in school were directed at getting her ready to pursue a career in the Medical field. She pulled straight A's in high school, and though she didn't graduate first or second, she was in the top percentage. After graduating, Rachel packed up most of her things and moved to the University of Pennsylvania dorms where she had a scholarship. Once there though, she found the Pre-Med wasn't for her, so with the approval of the University, she changed her major to English and stayed until she had her Masters degree. Once there, she quickly accepted a job offer for The Arts Academy came through her advisor, she quickly set up her resume and sent it away. A few weeks later, she got a letter in the mail saying she had been accepted for the position. This was the first time she'd be more than a few minutes drive or trolley ride from her family and she wasn't sure how she felt about it. But with not much else on the table for her, Rachel didn't have much of a choice. So after getting a small amount of money from her parents, she set off for her new life in Portland, Maine. | ||
